CSA has been a prime mover in recent years in the
saving of the remnants of Inner Bay salmon stocks. These images
chronicle the release of both grilse and large MSW salmon; reared
from Stewiacke River progeny as part of DFO's genebanking program
at the Coldbrook Hatchery .
For the last few Autumns, CSA directors and angler
volunteers have assisted in both the attempted capture by angling
of wild (or hatchery reared) salmon and in the release of these
sexually-mature adult fish into selected area rivers (in these images,
the Debert and Stewiacke respectively). These releases are undertaken
in the hope that the salmon may breed among themselves or with the
few remaining wild fish. Any resultant egg deposition would serve
to augment the severely depressed wild juvenile stock.
While some wild parr are being seen in the various
feeder streams to our Inner Bay rivers, there is no positive sign
that the endangered status can be lifted as yet.
